Only a 25-minute drive southwest of Bonn, the Ahr Valley, with its impressive steep, terraced vineyards and beautiful half-timbered towns, provides the picture-perfect backdrop for these festivities.

Beginning this weekend, the wine festival season kicks off in Ahrweiler with the Ahr’s oldest Winzerfest. The nearby towns of Rech, Bachem, Dernau, Altenahr and Mayschoß will soon follow with their own wine festivals. Visitors can enjoy the festive atmosphere of live music in market squares, the crowning of the new wine queens, and colorful parades of vintners’ floats, marching bands, and local groups in traditional costumes. Certainly not least is the pleasure of tasting the region’s wines!

Festival-goers can sample a local Spätburgunder, mix with other wine enthusiasts, eat a traditional Zwiebelkuchen (onion tart) then wash it down with a glass of Federweisser (“new wine”). Sometimes, local residents even open up a room in their home to serve guests the local specialties during this season. For those living in the Bonn area, it’s really the time to enjoy the spectacle of a German wine festival. Many festivals conclude their celebrations with a spectacular display of fireworks over the vineyards. Join the party and have a rousing good time!
